Enjoy Not Knowing

Just another American living in Sweden

lucia

Today is Lucia in Sweden. Possibly other countries as well but I’m not as updated on their traditions. Lucia is a holiday which isn’t celebrated in the US, and as such was completely new to me when I moved here.

As I’ve written about the history of the Lucia celebration previously I won’t bring it up in detail again, but feel free to check out the post here!

This year Lucia lands on a Sunday and by some miracle we don’t have a hockey game. So Evelina and I will be baking lussekatter, eating gingerbread cookies and drinking glögg (Swedish spiced wine, which comes in both alcoholic and non alcoholic varieties).

Happy Lucia!

the summer solstice

Today is the summer solstice! Meaning it is the longest day of the year, when we get the most hours of sunlight here in the Northern hemisphere. Despite the fact that today is the longest day of the year, here in Sweden we celebrated two days ago, on Friday. Unlike Friday it’s actually pretty sunny today! Much warmer as well. For the first time this year summer is at our doorstep. Hopefully soon to actually breach the threshold.

I am very ready for summer’s arrival. Not only because of the excellent festivities in Sweden for midsummer, as cataloged in 2012 and 2014. But also for the cake.

strawberry cake

Kidding, summer isn’t just about strawberry cake (though would it be so bad if it were?). I’m looking forward to long summer nights, sunny summer days, and wearing sunglasses daily. Basically, I’m looking forward to the sun. Me and the sun are tight. Except when it’s fire rays burn blisters into my skin. Then we’re not so tight. Definitely not doing that this summer. Stay tuned to see if I’m successful in that endeavor.

twenty one. get wicked cool sunglasses

This was a fun one. Of course I think all the things on the list are fun, but this one was especially fun. I mean who doesn’t like sunglasses? Sunglasses symbolize summer. Sunshine. Outdoors. All the wonderful things about the lightest half of the year. Which is especially appreciated here in Sweden. Summer sunshine is longed for through out the long, cold, dark winters. And it’s finally here!

So I’ll put on my new, wicked cool sunglasses, and get outside!

this week

“I have a friend who took all the doors out of his house one summer. It reminds me there’s nothing I have that’s worth hiding, he said. No secrets is the key to world peace. He put them all back on that winter. I decided it was peaceful enough for me, he said.”

– Brian Andreas

This week I’ve read some pretty heavy blog entries. Heavy stuff involving abuse, miscarriage, death, rage, blood, pain. It was all in there. This stuff is weighing me down. Makes me walk a little slower. Makes me think. Something that is resonant through these stories I have read, though, include the opposite side of life. Resilience, healing, strength, forgiveness, continuing, love. These things show through. Make me lighter. Allow me to turn my face to the sun and smile. Allows me to accept the warmth that is also in the world.

I admire these beautiful women for what they have shared on WordPress of late, and it reminded me of the Brian Andreas quote above.

If you’re interested, here are the posts, however, if you’re already in a crummy mood, maybe just go for a walk instead:
