book of august: middlesex

Don’t think I’m ahead of schedule here, this is actually my book of August from a while ago…So I’m little behind schedule, but here it is:

Middlesex

When I say a little behind schedule, apparently I mean three years behind schedule. *geeze* I am apparently a horrible friend. Okay, horrible might be a strong word, but I’ve definitely been slacking on my friend duties. My bad.

Let me explain. My friend Elizabeth and I (name obviously changed to protect identity) decided to do a book club. This book club consisted solely of the two of us. Meaning that we would both read the same book in a months time, and discuss it over Skype.

I did not read the book in a months time. Nor did we ever Skype about it. I mean I did finish the book just now, so we could theoretically Skype about it now…but I didn’t even tell Elizabeth that I’ve finished the book. This will be the first she is hearing of it. Alright I’ll say it. Horrible friend = me.

Let’s disregard that though and focus on the book. I don’t like to dwell.

Middlesex was on Oprah’s book list. Or recommendation list. Or some kind of list written by Oprah, you know the one:

Anyway, I think that is why Elizabeth suggested we read the book. Oprah knows her shit.

To be honest though, the book wasn’t exactly up my ally. Though you may have guessed that since it took me THREE YEARS to complete. I mean it’s not like I’ve been actively reading it for that long, there have been breaks….okay, nevermind.

It did get really good for the final third of the book. But it is really important you read the first two-thirds in order to understand the end…well the moral is, it may be a great book for you, but for me it was an exercise in discipline and determination to be a good friend.

I hope this makes up for it! … ?

the 200th

Well here it is. Much sooner than I thought.

When I started out on this grand adventure, I never could have imagined what my blog would become. And now, only three months away from my three year anniversary, a lot has changed. Not only on the blog.

Since day one I’ve written 30 book of the month posts. (And read as many books!)

Since day one I’ve completed 17 things that I’ve always wanted to do. (Check out the 25 before 25 and 30 before 30 lists to read about them!)

Since day one some things have happened. I’ve learned a new language, I’ve travelled, I’ve made memories, and met people who are impossible to forget. I’ve used this blog to catalogue the great things. The adventures and smile bearing small moments.

There have been some bumps along the road, some that I’ve casually mentioned, but I try not to dwell. I do hope you fabulous readers do know that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. I do prefer to highlight the good though. Positivity builds on itself to create more good. So when I’m down I can pick myself back up by taking a little peek at my own corner of the internet. It usually works.

Let’s start a tradition then, and focus on the good, like how many different places in the world my blog has poked it’s nose into your lives.

That’s 75 countries y’all. How many views does your country have?

I hope you enjoy what you see.

twenty five. come up with a 30 before 30 list

Well, here it is. The last item on my list, the last day before I turn 25.

Have you all noticed the new page now available at the top menu? There it is! My 30 before 30 list.

New list, new adventures.

30 before 30

Follow the big red arrow

This time with a full five years to complete my items, I hope to get a few more of them done. Seems like some exciting times are ahead! Just wait and see.

one. get married

Remember that party I told you I was saving up for. Well it’s not my 25th birthday party…but rather my wedding. Our wedding day is something we’ve looked forward to for a long time. That statement feeling especially true after a 2 and a half year engagement.

Wedding

Things are starting to fall into place though, and although I won’t be married before I turn 25 I won’t have to wait too much longer. I’ll be sure to write about the big day once it comes, so stay tuned.

ten. watch 10 films on imdb’s top 250 list

To specify, I wanted to watch 10 films I had not yet seen, from this fun list on IMDB’s webpage.

Sidebar: Does anyone use the word webpage anymore?

ANYWHO!

I got really close on this one. As of my latest update I had watched 6/10 of the movies on my list. Since then Evelina and I watched Schindler’s List, so that’s another step forward.

I was a little embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t seen this one. We had seen clips in history class, but I don’t believe that counts…If you haven’t seen it, Schindler’s list is a horribly wonderful movie. Comes highly recommended.

It does, unfortunately, leave this item incomplete. Evelina seems less than thrilled with the three remaining films, so if this item is to be completed looks like I’ll be going it alone.

Have you seen any of the remaining films? Which should I see first?

twenty. paint a painting

This is one of my New Year’s resolutions. I had planned to complete this one in early April. I’m here today to tell you that did not happen. I do still hope to complete this bad boy before the turn of the year. I will just not be able to complete it before I turn 25. Sadly.

I do have it all planned out though. I don’t want to give everything away, but it involves black, white and grey, and birds. I hope I’ve piqued your interests! I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Until then, here’s a teaser:

sixteen. visit a friend at their new residence

Another completed goal! I bet you all thought I was a super slacker after reading about three incomplete goals in a row. But never fear! I’m here today to tell you about a completed goal.

The summer of  2012 was a big summer for travel for me. That July I made a trip down to D.C. to visit my oldest friend, Elizabeth. (Again, oldest as in we’ve known each other since the diaper years, read: best friend, not my oldest living friend.) D.C. is great, and I recommend it to all. Especially those of American decent, ours is such a historical capital and with all the fun touristy things it’s really worth a trip.

Me sandwich

See what fun there is to be had! (Side bar: ridiculous sun burn not required.)

I even have some exciting news. I visited another friend at her new residence. Her gender is all the hint you’ll be getting for now, though. As, this is a story for a future date. Exciting, I know.

Stay tuned.

twenty two. do a handstand push up

Now this is another one of my dreams, that just didn’t quite make it. When I say a handstand push up, I’m talking about a free-standing handstand push up. In pursuit of my goal, I started with practicing my handstands. This was apparently a miscalculation.

I should have started practicing my wall assisted hand stands first, then worked on my wall assisted handstand push ups, and then moved my way up to free-standing handstand push ups. What I really should have done was all this research a little sooner than today.

If you Google handstand push ups you get a lot of hits. YouTube videos, advice columns…hopefully this blog post, which will be of no assistance what-so-ever in terms of helpful hints. I guess this is what not to do!

My top three things in how to not to learn to do a handstand push up:

  • Don’t practice handstands at work.
  • Don’t practice handstand on hard surfaces.
  • Don’t ask your friends to help you learn to do a handstand – they will laugh at your failed attempts.

Hope that helps!

eight. go to greece

I had a master evil plan. It was glorious. It involved my escape, with Evelina of course, to the warm, sandy beaches of Greece. In my fantastical plan I would spend my 25th birthday sipping adult beverages in the sunshine.

Sadly, this will not be the reality. I still have good chances of sipping adult beverages in the sunshine, however I will not be in Greece. My dream vacation is still only a dream. Turns out my fantasies have deeper pockets than I do. Greece will have to wait. I hope it isn’t going anywhere.

The resolve has not lessened.
